Celebrating Generations of Diversity

The purpose of the page is for our staff and students to be able to illustrate the amazing things that are happening at our school!

What is IDAC?
Intercultural Diversity Advisory Council (IDAC) draws members from parents to represent our school at district level climate assessment/problem-solving meetings. The primary purpose of the Intercultural Diversity Advisory Council (IDAC), originally formed in 1988 as the Intercultural Advisory Council, is to assist in the formation and review of policies that assure non-discriminatory practices in all operational areas of the Clovis Unified School District. Its further mission is to assist in improving the cultural environment of the District.

IDAC Focus Areas

In an effort for continued growth and improvement, Nelson Elementary is focusing on the following areas:

School Culture:  Nelson has used the Positivity Project since the 2022-2023 school year.   In addition to our focus on Character Counts!, Nelson Elementary directly instructs students in character traits that build a positive and inclusive community, and celebrate those practices.

Acceptance and Understanding of All:  Nelson Elementary promotes inclusivity through collaborative mentoring in the PALS program, Reading Buddies across grade levels, and multicultural assemblies throughout the year.

Digital Citizenship:  Nelson is a Common Sense Media School and provides weekly technology instruction in the areas of cyber-safety, cyber-validation, and cyber-citizenship for grades 1 – 6. Technology lessons includes keyboarding and basic computing skills so that all students are able to access learning through technology.

Student Relationships:  Students are provided many opportunities to develop relationships outside of their classrooms and develop leadership skills through Student Council, Leadership, service clubs, and service responsibilities.  Students learn that anyone can be a role model and leader by accepting the responsibility to do so.

Staff Development:  Staff development is ongoing with monthly classes focused on learning needs of all students, instructional practices to meet those needs, and cultural awareness.  Resources used in classrooms and the LMC reflect the cultural and ethnic diversity of the Nelson Community.
